ADA Ramps Replacement

When faced with ADA ramps replacement due to damaged or non compliant ramps, there are a few rules to fallow to ensure that the ramps are ADA compliant. And we must not forget to outfit the ramp with an Armor-Tile Detectable Warning Surface Tile manufactured by Engineered Plastics, Inc.

The draft guidelines provide technical criteria for perpendicular, parallel, and blended transitions curb ramps. The perpendicular curb ramps are the most common type.

Draft Guidelines for Accessible Public Rights-of-Way

Perpendicular Curb ramps must have a maximum slope of 1:12. The draft guidelines specify a minimum slope of 1:48.

Parallel ramps are suited to narrow rights-of-way where there is not enough space for a perpendicular curb ramp. Parallel curb ramps must have a 1:12 maximum and 1:48 minimum and cross slop of 1:48 maximum, level landings at the bottom have to be at least 48 by 48 inches.

Blended transitions are to have slopes parallel and perpendicular to the curb no grater then 1:48. Transitions with a slope grater than 1:48 are to be treated as a curb ramp.

If the ADA ramp replacement requires only the detectable warning surface to be replaced then there are a few methods that might be useful.

Stamped domes on a compliant ramp can be replaced by cup-grinding the domes down so that you have a flat surface. Then blow off any excess dust and wipe down the area with acetone. You then can apply an Armor-Tile Surface Applied Detectable Warning Surface Tile with Adhesive, fasteners and perimeter Sealant.

Brick pavers that are cracked and or missing domes can be removed. The area should be saw cut 2 to 3 inches larger then the tile it will receive; pour new concrete and set in an Armor-Tile Cast in Place Detectable Warning Surface Tile into the wet concrete.

Rubber mats can be pulled up and the surface off the cement can be cub grinded and an Armor-tile Surface Applied Tile (example #1) can be applied.
