Truncated Tiles Detectable Surface

By Aaron McConachie

Armor-Tile Tactile Systems offer the most comprehensive set of detectable warning surfaces available.  From truncated tiles detectable surface to directional systems to guidance systems, Armor-Tile is your one stop shop for all safety surface needs.

Truncated Tiles Detectable SurfaceDirectional systems function as a tactile pathway to lead visually impaired pedestrians to a particular destination.  Used in conjunction with braille signs, the directional tiles can provide necessary information about the surrounding environment.  For instance, the directional system has been proven to be an effective way of leading pedestrians to certain bus, train, or subway stops.  When a curb ramp does not provide adequate information, directional tiles can also be used to align one’s self, in the proper direction, with a crosswalk.

Within a ramp, truncated tiles detectable surface should be used to indicate the boundary between the sidewalk and the potentially hazardous roadway. The truncated domes are not intended to provide directional information.  That is why a directional tile may be your best option to increase safety at particularly dangerous intersections.

Once into the crosswalk, a visually impaired pedestrian can use Armor-Tile’s guidance system to determine a path of travel across the intersection.  Similar to a directional tile, the guidance tile is intended for asphalt applications.
