PART 1 GENERAL

  1. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Special Conditions and Division 1 Specifications Section, apply to this Section.

2. DESCRIPTION

This Section consists of furnishing and installing modular precast tactile paver tiles factory pre-cast with a 1 3/8" thick reinforced epoxy polymer concrete core ready for field installation.

  1. SUBMITTALS
  1. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s literature describing products, installation procedures and routine maintenance.
  2. Samples for Verification Purposes: Submit one (1) sample of full size modular precast tactile paver tile of the kind proposed for use.
  3. Shop drawings are required for products specified showing fabrication details; tile surface profile; fastener locations; plans of tile placement including joints, and material to be used as well as outlining installation materials and procedure.
  1. Material Test Reports: Submit test reports from qualified independent testing laboratory indicating that materials proposed for use are in compliance with requirements and meet the properties indicated.
  2. Maintenance Instructions: Submit copies of manufacturer’s specified maintenance practices for each type of tactile tile and accessory as required.



  1. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Provide surface applied tactile tiles and accessories as produced by a single manufacturer.

  1. Installer’s Qualifications: Engage an experienced Installer certified in writing by tactile flooring manufacturer as qualified for installation, who has successfully completed tile installations similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for Project. Manufacturer’s supervisor shall be present at all times during installation.
  2. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): Provide tactile warning surfaces which comply with the detectable warnings on walking surfaces section of the Americans with Disabilities Act (Title 49 CFR TRANSPORTATION, Part 37.9 STANDARDS FOR ACCESSIBLE TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES, Appendix A, Section 4.29.2 DETECTABLE WARNINGS ON WALKING SURFACES. In addition products must comply with CALIFORNIA TITLE 24 requirements regarding pattern, color and sound on cane contact.
  3. Vitrified Polymer Composite (VPC) modular precast tactile paver tiles shall be an epoxy polymer composition with an ultra-violet coating employing aluminum oxide particles in the truncated domes:
    1. Water Absorption of Tile when tested by ASTM-D 570 not to exceed 0.35%.
    2. Slip Resistance of Tile when tested by ASTM-C 1028 the combined wet/dry static co-efficient of friction not to be less than 0.80.
    3. Compressive Strength of tile when tested by ASTM-D 695-91 not to be less than 18,000 psi.
    4. Tensile Strength of Tile when tested by ASTM-D 638-91 not to be less than 10,000 psi.
    5. Flexural Strength of Tile when tested by ASTM - C293-94 not to be less than 24,000 psi.
    6. Gardner Impact to geometry "GE" of the standard when tested by ASTM-D 5420-93 to have a mean failure energy expressed as a function of specimen thickness of not less than 450 in. lbf/in. A failure is noted if a hairline fracture is visible in the specimen
    7. Chemical Stain Resistance of Tile when tested by ASTM-D 543-87 to withstand without discoloration or staining - 1% hydrochloric acid, urine, calcium chloride, stamp pad ink, gum and red aerosol paint..
    1. Abrasive Wear of Tile when tested by BYK - Gardner Tester ASTM-D 2486* with reciprocating linear motion of 37 ± cycles per minute over a 10" travel. The abrasive medium, a 40 grit Norton Metallite sand paper, was fixed and leveled to a holder. The combined mass of the sled, weight and wood block is 3.2 lb. Average wear depth shall not exceed 0.030 after 1000 abrasion cycles measured on the top surface of the dome representing the average of three measurement locations per sample.
    2. Fire Resistance: When tested to ASTM E84 flame spread shall be less than 25.
    3. Accelerated Weathering of Tile when tested by ASTM-G26-95 for 2000 hours shall exhibit the following result - no deterioration, fading or chalking of surface of tile.
  1. Vitrified Polymer Composite (VPC) modular precast tactile paver tiles complete with polymer concrete core shall meet or exceed the following test criteria:
    1. Accelerated Aging and Freeze Thaw Test of Tile and polymer concrete core when tested to ASTM-D 1037 shall show no evidence of cracking, delamination, warpage, checking, blistering, color change, loosening of tiles or other defects.
    2. Salt and Spray Performance of Tile and polymer concrete core when tested to ASTM-B 117 not to show any deterioration or other defects after 100 hours of exposure.
  1. Polymeric Concrete and/or epoxy resin properties shall meet or exceed the following

test criteria:

    1. Tensile Strength of Resin: greater than 7,000psi; ASTM D638
    2. Modulus of Elasticity of Resin: greater than 4,000psi; ASTM D638
    3. Bond Strength of Polymeric Concrete: greater than 8,000psi; ASTM C551
  1. Sealant for joint between tiles and joint between tiles and concrete: Cured material

shall be not less than 80 Shore A hardness and compatible with platform edge tile

and opposite joint edge material. Acceptable: Hilti

  1. Color shall be yellow conforming to Federal Color No. 33538. Color shall be

homogenous throughout the tile.

  1. DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
  1. Precast pavers shall be suitably packaged or crated to prevent damage in shipment or handling. Finished surfaces shall be protected by sturdy wrappings, and tile type shall be identified by part number.
  2. Precast pavers shall be delivered to location at building site for storage prior to installation.

 

6. SITE CONDITIONS

  1. Environmental Conditions and Protection: Maintain minimum temperature of 40 degrees F in spaces to receive tactile tiles for at least 48 hours prior to installations, during installation, and for not less than 48 hours after installation. Store precast pavers in spaces where they will be installed for at least 48 hours before beginning installation. Subsequently, maintain minimum temperature of 40 degrees F in areas where work is completed.
  2. The use of water for work, cleaning or dust control, etc. shall be in contained and controlled and shall not be allowed to come into contact with the passengers or public. Provide barricades or screens to protect passengers or public.
  3. Disposal of any liquids or other materials of possible contamination shall be made in accordance with federal state and local laws and ordinances.
  4. Cleaning materials shall have code acceptable low VOC solvent content and low flammability if used on the site.
  5. Contractor shall coordinate phasing and flagging personnel operations as specified elsewhere.
  1. EXTRA STOCK

 

  1. Deliver extra stock to warehouse designated by engineer. Furnish new materials from same manufactured lot as materials installed and enclose in protective packaging with appropriate identification. Furnish not less than two (2)% of the supplied materials for each type, color and pattern installed.


  1. GUARANTEE
  1. Modular precast tactile paver tiles shall be guaranteed in writing for a period of five years from date of final completion. The guarantee includes defective work, breakage, deformation, fading and chalking of finishes, and loosening of panels.

 

Part 2 PRODUCTS

 

  1. MANUFACTURERS
  1. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated in the Work include, but are not limited to, the following:
  2. The Vitrified Polymer Composite (VPC) Modular Precast Tactile Paver Tiles specified is based on Armor-Tile manufactured by Engineered Plastics Inc. (800-682-2525). Existing engineered ADA and California Title 24 field tested products in service for a minimum of 2 years which are subject to compliance with requirements, may be incorporated in the work and shall meet or exceed the specified test criteria and characteristics.

C. Color: Yellow conforming to Federal Color No. 33538. Color shall be homogenous throughout the tile.

 

  1. MATERIALS
  1. Stainless steel expansion anchors 3/8" inch diameter by 5 inch long to be positioned in the molded recess of the modular precast tactile paver tile and concealed with a VPC concealed cap.
  2. Heavy duty elastomeric polyurethane adhesive as manufactured by Boiardi, Mapei, Bostik or approved equal.
  3. Heavy duty elastomeric polyurethane sealant as manufactured by Boiardi, Mapei, Bostik or approved equal.

 

PART 3 EXECUTION

 

  1. INSTALLATION
  1. Comply with applicable requirements of the panel manufacturer’s installation instructions.
  2. Panels shall have a structural epoxy polymer concrete fill and epoxy coated rebar system installed by the panel manufacturer.
  3. Layout paver tiles and joints to fit existing spacing between expansion joints in concrete slab, and ends of platform, with pavers cut to manufacturer’s preset rib configuration. Ribs shall be perpendicular to the platform track edge. Provide panels with largest size units as possible at ends.
  4. Sawcut a ¼ " wide by 1 ½ " deep groove 24" back from platform edge as required.
  5. Remove and dispose of the concrete topping approximately 24" back from edge of concrete.
  6. Provide a uniform and true 1 ½ " deep rebate as required by diamond grinding the structural concrete substrate which is revealed after the concrete topping is removed.
  7. Patching with approved mortar compound may be required in areas where the recess depth exceeds the tolerances or where deteriorated concrete requires removal.
  8. Vacuum concrete sub-base to remove dirt, dust debris and loose particles. Finish preparation by wiping any residual dust or dirt with an approved solvent.
  9. Apply heavy duty elastomeric polyurethane adhesive with a ½ " square notch trowel.
  10. Place plastic shims on substrate to coincide with leading edge corners of paver tile to set paver tile flush with adjacent surface.
  11. Set first paver tile over shims and adhesive and make final adjustment to the shims.
  12. Drill one 3/8 " diameter by 7" deep hole in the pre-determined paver tile recess and vacuum clean.
  13. Set one stainless steel expansion anchor (3/8 " dia. X 5" long) checking that torque of 20-25 foot pounds is achieved.
  14. Place plastic shim on substrate to coincide with leading edge corner of second paver tile to be placed.
  15. Set second paver tile over shims and adhesive and make final adjustments to the shim. Repeat the aforementioned steps for a continuous installation of paver tiles.
  16. Return to the start of paver tile installation to complete the finish operations.
  17. Mechanically abrade, vacuum clean and solvent wipe two concealed cap recesses.
  18. Apply urethane sealant/adhesive into cap well to cover fastener then set concealed cap with mallet.
  19. Vacuum clean, mechanically abrade and solvent wipe leading edge groove between panel and adjacent concrete surface.
  20. Place 3/8" diameter foam rope at bottom of leading edge groove.
  21. Tape off each side of leading edge groove in preparation for the self leveling urethane sealant.
  22. Pour Hilti self leveling urethane sealant in groove filling flush to top of joint then remove the tape prior to curing.
  23. Inspect and clean the paver tile after allowing the self leveling sealant to cure undisturbed or protected for 48 hours.
  24. Maintain expansion and contraction joints in platforms and any other reference marker or opening that may be required to be left exposed.
  1. CLEANING AND PROTECTING
  1. Protect paver tiles against damage during construction period to comply with paver tile manufacturer’s specification.
  2. Protect paver tiles against damage from rolling loads following installation by covering with plywood or hardwood.
  3. Clean paver tiles not more than four days prior to date scheduled for inspection intended to establish date of substantial completion in each area of project. Clean paver tile as specified by manufacturer.
